Katla is of Russian noble blood, When she was to marry a balding warty viscount she stowed away on a merchants knarr to get as far away as she could. On arrival in Alba the merchant tried to sell all his wares to Ulfgrim, which he did with the agreement of "I'll take all you have brought from the east for 400 silver" they then shook upon this (a binding agreement). During unloading Katla was found and brought out the merchant who was going to take her and sell her elsewhere but Ulfgrim stood his ground asked where she was from. The merchant had to concide that he had indeed brought her from the east and therefore she was his.
